The Big Island has some mad juju. I could feel it.
In April 2015, I traveled to Hawaii to visit my friends on Maui and then have my visit adventure on the Big Island of Hawaii. Each island has its own unique energy and feel, and I would call the Big Island the “Working Island”. There are real people here, living the Aloha life, but in a more volcanic way. Fewer paradise postcard scenes, more real island flavor. Much quieter too. I had heard that when Hawaiians take a holiday, they come to the Big Island.
Picked up my rental car and took a beautiful drive from the airport in Kona to Hilo, on the other side of the island, by way of Saddle Road. My Airbnb place was over there in Pahoa. And on the drive over, I actually went through a rainbow! When I got there, I discovered that I had chosen to stay on an active farm with lots of migratory hippies who were having a 420 Party. What incredible luck. ;)
The Big Island was where King Kamehameha lived and ruled his islands. As I walked toward this magical place, I could feel the energy get thick. I was almost afraid to make it to the place where he ruled, into the valley near Black Sands Beach. I was kind of relieved when a fairly sizable spring stream blocked my passage. But I got close!
The first few pictures are from my hike in the Bamboo Forest on Maui, and the rest are on the Big Island.
