New Animal Medicine Card: Horse

Horse is the second card I did using my new process. I have been using Affinity designer, and I really like it! I am a Photoshop geek, nearly expert, having been a digital photo retoucher as well as using it for my primary means of finishing an illustration. So, switching has been interesting!

The reason for finding new software to create my illustrations was two-fold. One was that I wanted my creation tool to be completely portable – I could complete an entire illustration on my iPad, on my lap, while on a trans-continental flight if I really had to. The other reason was that I was encouraged / challenged to start creating in vector, and Affinity Designer is actually a vector/raster mashup. So I use Affinity on my iPad, using my Apple pencil, using both the vector and raster features together, and it’s very natural and intuitive… for the most part. Of course there is always an uncomfortable learning curve when using anything new. But it became familiar pretty quickly. I started using this about month ago and I am already comfortable with it. It sure is way easier to use than Adobe Illustrator, and even Procreate, IMO.

So, here is horse, created in Affinity on my iPad using an Apple pencil.
